Windows and Android Device DHCP Information
Vendor Class Identifiers in DHCP Requests
DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, is a network protocol that assigns IP addresses and other network configuration parameters to devices on a network. When a device makes a DHCP request, it includes a Vendor Class Identifier (VCI) in the request. This VCI identifies the type of device that is making the request.
Common VCI Values
*
WEB MSFT 5 0: Windows computer *
dhcpcd-5 5 6: Android device *
MSFT 50: Windows-based device (traditional Client Vendor Name) *
MSFT 50 xbox: Microsoft Xbox device
Updated VCI Values for Windows Devices
In some cases, the traditional MSFT 50 VCI value has been updated for Windows-based devices. Some devices now use the VCI value MSFT 50.
Xbox VCI Value
The MSFT 50 xbox VCI value indicates that the client device is a Microsoft Xbox. This device implements the DHCP specification and understands all encapsulated vendor-specific options.
Troubleshooting DHCP Issues with Xbox Devices
Some Xbox devices may experience DHCP issues if the router is configured to force the Xbox to use the 2.4 GHz frequency band. To resolve this issue, you can either rename the SSIDs of the different frequency bands or temporarily turn off the 2.4 GHz band and then back on again.
